What is an Apprenticeship?

An Apprenticeship is a planned programme of learning that leads to the completion of a nationally recognised suite of qualifications; a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ), Key Skills and a Technical Certificate.

NATIONAL VOCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS (NVQS)

NVQs are not based on examinations but on the assessment of the practical skills and knowledge that you have learned in the workplace and are, therefore, a measure of how competently you do your job. NVQs are achieved by successfully completing a series of units to nationally recognised standards and are assessed in the workplace.

KEY SKILLS

Key Skills are achieved at different levels dependant upon the Framework being undertaken. They are known as transferable skills and are important in everyday life and recognised by employers.

TECHNICAL CERTIFICATES

Technical Certificates are vocationally related qualifications aimed at developing your underpinning knowledge in support of your chosen vocational area. The training is usually delivered in off-the-job sessions and you will acquire skills that are useful within your job role.

SOMETHING ELSE YOU SHOULD KNOW…

These programmes are available at two different levels:

  • Apprenticeships
  • Advanced Apprenticeships

We will help you to decide which programme is most appropriate for you, based on what you have done in the past and your current job role. There is also the option of using these programmes as progression routes - some learners move on to an Advanced programme once they have completed their Apprenticeship Framework.
